Safe Workplace Promotion Services Ontario

The Ontario prevention system recently restructured its programs and services to better assist Ontario businesses in reducing the number of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities in their workplaces. As a result of these changes, 12 of the province’s health and safety associations have amalgamated to form four new organizations, effective January 1, 2010. One of these organizations is Safe Workplace Promotion Services Ontario (SWPSO), which includes Farm Safety Association (FSA), Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA), and Ontario Service Safety Alliance (OSSA).

The SWPSO Advisory Group is searching for candidates with senior executive and leadership experience from Ontario’s industrial, service, and farming sectors who have vision, leadership, and commitment. This is an opportunity to provide leadership in the health and safety field within the business community and influence the strategic direction of SWPSO. This is also an opportunity for your company to be recognized as a leader in healthy workplaces.

SWPSO Board of Directors

SWPSO is dedicated to steering Ontario's service industry towards a better, safer tomorrow. Becoming a board member is also about making sure that the SWPSO team stays closely connected to the communities we serve.

The SWPSO is always looking for volunteers with the "right stuff" and the "right fit" -- people who share our vision and who want to make a difference.

SWPSO board members support the association, its vision and its work by lending expertise to help:

  • Provide objective representation of our members' interests in every sector of the service industry
  • Determine SWPSO's vision and mission statement
  • Elect all Officers of the Board of Directors to their appointments
  • Provide on-going support and guidance to SWPSO's Executive staff
  • Ensure effective organizational planning
  • Monitor defined programs and services to ensure effective, high quality delivery
  • Ensure adequate resources are available and used effectively
  • Raise public awareness about SWPSO and the services we provide to our members

The Board of Directors is also accountable to its member firms and the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board for:

  • Monitoring the implementation of Board decisions
  • Participation in the development and effective administration of Performance Agreements
  • Working in co-operation with the guidance of the SWPSO membership

Benefits of being a Board Member:

  • Develop and enhance your leadership skills
  • Make a difference in the Health & Safety of Ontario's service sector
  • Share your business insight and skills
  • Expand your business network with senior decision-makers and industry leaders
  • Gain strategic knowledge and broaden your business skills
  • A deep sense of accomplishment and pride in results
  • Influence senior decision-makers and work as a team toward a common goal

Directors are expected to regularly attend meetings, participate on committees, and attend events. The Board of Directors meets six times a year, including an off-site planning and review workshop. Board committee meetings are usually conducted by teleconference. As this is a new organization, the time commitments in the first 12-18 months are likely to be more extensive. The Board is seeking competencies at a senior executive level – CEO, President, Vice President, Executive Director, or Assistant Deputy Minister – in the areas of:

  • Crisis management/intervention
  • Sales and marketing
  • Communications/Public Relations
  • Insurance/Risk Management
  • Technology, e-retail, e-solutions

An over-arching interest and experience in strategic thinking and scenario planning is a core development focus for the Board.
