The REGIONAL

Health & Safety News, Events & Information

June 2009

June will certainly be an eventful month for workplaces that employ young workers. The Regional provides tips on how to prepare for the Ministry of Labour (MOL) Young Worker Blitz. This edition also throws light on the Violence and Harassment Bill and, with what authority would inspectors from any of Ontario's 13 regulatory ministries report you for violations that cut across jurisdictions.

Regulatory News

Thirteen Different Regulatory Ministries Will Make Referrals To One Another

The Regulatory Modernization Act, 2006, Bill 69 is set to take effect in 2009 (probably this spring). This Act makes it possible for inspectors from 13 different regulatory inistries within the Ontario government to make referrals to one another if they see a contravention of another ministry's legislation while in your workplace. Read more about how it will work.

Ontario Government Introduces Violence And Harassment Bill

Statistics indicate that workplace violence is on the rise - supported by two recent news stories about workplace violence, one involving a security guard who chased a shoplifter who had allegedly stolen baby food at Zellers.

The Ministry of Labour reports that between April and September 2008, inspectors visited 198 firms and issued 185 orders related to violence in the workplace. Read more to learn about Bill 168 which, if passed, will require employers to identify which of their staff are most at risk and how employers could stay ahead of the curve.

MOL News

Ministry of Labour's Young and New Worker Blitz kicks off in June

School's out and summer jobs beckon. Young workers, some them entering the job market for the first time in their lives, start out eager to please and breathtakingly inexperienced. It can be a formula for tragedy.

Between 2001 and 2008, workers aged 15 to 24 sustained 573 critical injuries. During that period, 27 individuals died as a result of workplace injuries - shattering the lives of families, friends and colleagues.
